New Delhi: 2014 Hockey India League champions Delhi Waveriders have contributed in a big way to promote hockey and its initiative is turning out to be a success story. The most consistent team in the HIL have won many hearts in promoting the sport at the grass-root level.

After a successful year last term with the Delhi Waveriders School Cup taking place here, this season's tournament that kicked off on 8th January is already witnessing a sound competition between various schools across the city.

Such youth programmes at a lower level will bring out the best in the sport and can also pave a way for various other sports to promote the game and provide a base for children from all backgrounds. Last year we also witnessed the Indian Soccer League starting its grass-root level programmes and the decision turns out to be a major boost for all.

The 'School Cup' which will end on January 17, 2015, sees 40 teams participating, in the tournament.

Hockey needs an urgent spread amongst fans, and such initiatives provide a base to make things popular. The impetus lies at the grass-root levels and the desire for children to learn the sport is a major plus.

With getting a chance to meet the main team players alongside the support of Hockey India, the tourney presents a chance to youngsters making a mark for themselves in front of national selectors. Success here contributes largely towards state teams.

It will be interesting to see how will the tournament find its feet in promoting itself to other cities.

Delhi Waveriders will go out all guns blazing in the third edition of the HIL starting from January 22nd under the leadership of India skipper Sardar Singh.
