Chennai: Former India skipper Deepak Thakur led Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Mumbai from the front as the defending champions held on to their guns to edge past Army XI 3-2 in the final of the 89th MCC Murugappa Hockey Tournament here on Sunday.

The match seemed to be a fight among equals right up to the half-time, after which the competition got hotter by the minute.

The final few minutes saw frantic attempts by both teams to firm up their positions in the match.

With the aplomb shown in the earlier matches too, Thakur was not only the Man of the Match in the finals but also received a special prize for the Best Forward in the tourney.
