ICC should have punished Dhoni: Harper
Melbourne: Former international umpire Daryl Harper, who retired from cricket amidst controversy after the first Test against West Indies at Jamaica, has said that Indian captain MS Dhoni should have been punished for criticizing him publicly.
Harper also said that it’s the Indian captain’s remarks that forced him to take ‘premature retirement’ from umpiring in the penultimate match of his career as a match official.
Harper was supposed to retire after the 3rd Test at Dominica but withdrew himself from officiating the match after Dhoni openly criticized his decisions.
He blamed the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the whole incident, saying that it reflected the advent of "selective management" in cricket for various teams.
Harper even claimed that after Indian paceman Praveen Kumar was barred from bowling in the first innings for repeatedly running on the pitch, Dhoni came to him and said, "We`ve had problems with you before, Daryl."
After the first match Dhoni slammed Harper for poor umpiring, saying that the match would have been finished much earlier if there were lesser number of umpiring errors. "If the correct decisions were made the game would have finished much earlier and I would have been in the hotel by now," he said at the post-match press conference.
