David Beckham on provisional Olympic list
Zeenews Sports Bureau

LONDON: English football icon and former England skipper David Beckham`s inclusion in Britain`s 35-man provisional squad on Friday gave his dream of Olympic participation a boost.

The announcement of the final 18-man squad will be made on July 6 by Stuart Pearce. Beckham would appear as one of three permitted overage players if his place is confirmed in the team.

His former Manchester United teammate Ryan Giggs, and former England teammates Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard have also been mentioned as potential candidates along with Welsh footballer Craig Bellamy.

Beckham played an influential role in getting the Olympics to London. In spite of not playing football for nine years in England, he is still enormously popular all over the world and in England, of course.

A formal announcement by the Football Association regarding the 35-man squad is yet to be decided upon.
