Half of Australian team to miss Olympics opening ceremony

London: Almost half of Australian athletes participating in the London Olympics are expected to miss the opening ceremony to focus on their preparations for the sporting event. According to The Age, Hockeyroos star Casey Eastham revealed that the team had decided not to attend the event because of an early morning training session the following day. Eastham conceded that it was difficult decision to make. “I``m sure some of the girls will be upset,” the report quoted her, as saying ``”We``ve spoken at length about it and there``s lots of things that are going to be happening in the village that we``ll really look forward to,” she added. Instead, they will watch the start of the ceremony on a big screen in the athletes’ village, the report said. Australian Olympic Committee estimated that only 220 of its athletes would attend the ceremony when the Games are officially opened. Australia has 410 athletes in London, the smallest contingent since the Barcelona Games in 1992.
