I am fit to partner Leander Paes: Somdev

New Delhi: India’s number one singles player Somdev Devvarman, who hasn’t played in competitive tennis for almost 6 months, has announced that he is ready to play with Leander Paes in the London Olympics if given a chance.
With the deadline for submitting entries to International Tennis Federation (ITF) just a few hours away, All India Tennis Association is expected to announce India’s team for the 2012 London Olympics on Thursday.
“Honestly, I am ready to play with anyone if given a chance. I would take it as an honour if I am asked to partner Leander Paes. I have informed the AITA that I am fit to play both singles and doubles. It is now upto the selectors to decide,” he told CNN IBN.
However, in a letter to the All India Tennis Association (AITA), Paes had said he was ready to walk out of the team for the “sake of Indian tennis”.
“I’m comfortable with partnering Mahesh Bhupathi or Rohan Bopanna. If they refuse to play with me, I’ll be happy to play with the next best player AITA decides on,” Paes said.
“However, it would not be acceptable... if I am made to play with a player ranked 207/306 in the world while the No. 13 and No. 15-ranked (doubles) players form another team.”
