London: The warring Indian tennis players have nothing to show to the fans back home but team captain S P Misra sees some light in gritty performance by rookie Vishnu Vardhan in an otherwise below par show at the London Olympics.
Misra, who is also India`s Davis Cup captain, said he did expect a medal from his tennis players, who were mired in a selection row before landing in London. "I came with hopes of going back with a couple of medals in doubles and mixed doubles but going back without any medal is disappointing," Misra said in an interaction in the Games village. Misra lavished praise on young Vardhan, saying he played superbly. "In spite being a rookie Vishnu stood up and gave support to Leander Paes. His performance augers well for the future of Indian tennis," he said. Vardhan played better than the expectation in company of Paes with his solid serve and alacrity at the net. Misra though said he was happy that all the players put controversies behind them and gave their best. "All the players played well. I will say they put up a decent show. Mahesh and Bopanna won their first match against very tough opponent but lost the next to a pair which went on to play in the medal round. I think we should have been there," he said. PTI
