London Olympics 2012: Will third day bring luck for India?

Following two days of mixed results, India can hope to register its name in the medals tally on Monday when defending champion Abhinav Bindra takes another shot at Olympic glory.

London: Following two days of mixed results, India can hope to register its name in the medals tally on Monday when defending champion Abhinav Bindra takes another shot at Olympic glory. Along with him is Gagan Narang who will be aiming to break the Olympics jinx after having won numerous medals in 10m Air Rifle at different competitions all over the world but failing emulate it at the biggest sporting carnival in his previous two outings. Hockey: Also, the Indian men hockey team will open its campaign against The Netherlands. The eight-time Olympic gold medallist, currently ranked 10th in the world, will be hoping to start their campaign against a Dutch side that is ranked third. Badminton: Indian badminton pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will look to avoid being eliminated from the competition when they face Wen Hsing Cheng and Yu Chin Chien of Chinese Taipei. On the other hand, Saina Nehwal who began her campaign in a dominating fashion by outclassing her Swiss opponent on Sunday will look to continue with her form when taking field against Lianne Tan of Belgium. Tennis: After Somdev Devvarman bowed out of the men’s singles event losing in straight sets to Jarkko Nieminen, all eyes will be set on Vishnu Vardhan who was given a last-minute place after Germany`s Philipp Kohlschreiber withdrew due to a hamstring injury. He will be in action against Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia. The tennis doubles event was washed out due to rains on Sunday; the action begins from Monday and from India Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi with their respective partners will begin their campaign. Archery: After being knocked out from the team’s event, archer Laishram Bombayla Devi will begin her quest for individual glory with round of 32 match against Evangelia Psarra of Greece. Boxing: In boxing, Sumit Sangwan will square off against Brazilian Yamaguchi Falcao Florentino in his 81kg round of 32 bout.
