Sri Lanka Olympics participation rises to five
Colombo: Sri Lanka`s participation at this year`s London Olympics rose to five after female swimmer Rishika Udugampola won a wildcard entry, National Olympic Committee chairman Hemasiri Fernando said on Tuesday.
Four other Sri Lankan athletes -- marathon runner Anuradha Indrajith Cooray, shuttler Niluka Karunaratne, rifle shooter Mangala Samarakoon and male swimmer Heshan Unamboowe -- had previously qualified for the quadrennial sporting extravanganza, Fernando said.
Sri Lanka has won only two Olympic medals in the history of the Games.
Duncan White, a 110 meter hurdler won the silver in the 1948 Olympics in London. The next medal for the island nation came in the 2000 Sydney Games when woman sprinter Susanthika Jayasinghe won a bronze in 100 metre race.
She was later awarded silver when Marion Jones tested positive for banned steroids.
