Now, Leander Paes threatens to pull out of OlympicsZeenews Sports Bureau

New Delhi: In a new twist to the ongoing tennis row, Leander Paes has rejected the two team formula mooted by All India Tennis Association (AITA). He even threatened to pull out of the London Olympics if he has to team up with a lesser ranked player.

According to the sources, Paes has categorically told the AITA officials that he needs a worthy partner to participate for the London Olympics.

Paes has informed that he would only play if he teams up with either Mahesh Bhupathi or Rohan Bopanna. If he is forced to play with lower ranked player like Vishnu Vardhan or Yuki Bhambri, he would have no option but to withdraw himself from the London Olympics.

AITA on Tuesday came up with 5 formulas as a solution to the entire controversy over doubles team selection for London Olympics. One of the five solutions was that Bhupathi and Bopanna, who have refused to play with Paes, would pair up while Paes would play with any of the other lower ranked player.

The whole controversy started after Bhupathi refused to play with Paes despite AITA naming him and Paes as the Indian doubles team to represent the country at the London Olympics. Bhupathi openly expressed his displease about Paes calling him ‘a backstabber’ and ‘a liar”.

It was first thought that if Bhupathi did not change his stand, Bopanna would play with Paes. But things went bad to worse when Bopanna also too refused to pair Paes.

The whole controversy took a new turn when Sports Ministry tried to intervene into the whole issue asking AITA to resolve the issue.

I think it is not good to comment with out knowing AITA rule. As per Olympic rule, Paes have a right to choose to his choice of player. This tennis for your nation and for entire year you are playing for individual. We tax prayer are paying player $6000 per month and player must obliged

Why is it being forgotten that this is a team event and compatibility of partners is of paramount importance. Otherwise world no. 1 and no. 2 would have always partnered each other to sweep all grand slams!!!

Now Paes is going against AITA. Just like he is not ready to play with a lower rank player Mahesh Bhupati also wants to play with a player he is compatible with...Bhupati is also right in stating that if india can send 2 teams whey AITA is sending one team. Both are logically right on their stands But Paes has gone worse with not agreeing to send two teams for olympics. Surely Bhupati was somewhere right in rejecting to play witb Paes
