Monaco: Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso recorded the fastest time in a shortened first practice session at the Monaco Grand Prix on Thursday.
He finished ahead of rookie Lotus driver Romain Grosjean and Sauber`s Sergio Perez.
Alonso who managed a second position behind Vettel last year, posted a time of 1 minute, 16.265 seconds.
The session was stopped with just under 10 minutes remaining after Heikki Kovalainen blew his engine and smoke billowed out of his Caterham as he flew through the tunnel section.
Seven times world champion Michael Schumacher damaged his Mercedes`s front wing and finished 11th.
