Angela Merkel congratulates Sebastian Vettel on fourth title

Berlin: German chancellor Angela Merkel has congratulated Formula One star Sebastian Vettel on his fourth consecutive world drivers` championship title at Sunday`s Brazilian Grand Prix.

"I send my warmest congratulations to Sebastian Vettel on his winning the Formula One world title," said the German leader on the Federal government`s home page.

"Four titles in a row is a particularly outstanding performance.

"Along with millions of his fans, I am happy for him and his team and wish him lots more success in the future."

On Sunday, Vettel finished the 2013 Formula One season by capturing his ninth successive victory since July`s Hungarian Grand Prix, his 13th of the season and the 39th of his career.

The 26-year-old extended his own record of consecutive wins in a season, equalled Italian Alberto Ascari`s historic record of nine straight wins from 1952-1953.

He also equalled Michael Schumacher`s total for one season, set with Ferrari in 2004.
