Catamarca: In a tragic turn of events, a person has died after a car belonging to a Dakar Rally participant crashed into his car that was not even involved in the race.
The race participant, Eduardo Amor of Argentina, who was competing in the 10th stage of the competition, was immediately arrested and now further investigations will take place, reported an Argentine news agency DyN.
The victim, identified as a 48-year-old Argentinian, was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The accident took place shortly after 6am local time on Thursday while the the man was driving his car outside Tinogasta, which is in northern Argentine province of Catamarca, when the Rally participants moved through. The Toyota Hilux participant was many hours behind the pack as most of the rest of the Rally participants had already completed that stage -- between Copiapo, Chile and Chilecito, Argentina -- by Wednesday afternoon, organisers said.
Amor reported the accident to race organisers, who sent an ambulance and a helicopter to the site.
The Dakar rally has been regularly affected by accidents. In this year`s edition, this was the second death, after an electrician died last week as he set up a camp for the participants.
