Singapore: Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel proved why he was champion as he revved-up another astounding win to finish the Singapore Grand Prix 2011 on top of the podium. He has to gain a point from the remaining five races to end another year as World Champion.
It was Vettel’s first victory at the Marina Bay street circuit on a day that defied bad weather predictions to serve a perfect evening to speed enthusiasts.
Vettel was followed by McLaren’s Jenson Button who kept the race alive in second place and the British racer was visibly happy to make it count in a race that saw teammate and fellow Brit Lewis Hamilton finish fifth after coming back from behind. Hamilton had to serve a pit drive-through penalty for crashing into Ferrari's Felipe Massa on lap 12.
Red Bull’s Mark Webber helped the constructors’ cause, complimenting his team mate and finishing third in the night race on the street circuit. The top five drivers used the DRS to suit their strategy and made a healthy competition out of it.
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was superb for most part of the race but was outmanoeuvred by Webber to finish fourth, casting a deep shadow of doubt over his chances as ending the year on the ultimate pinnacle.
Vettel was a man on a mission at the Singapore GP, leading the pack in a dominating fashion right from the first lap to the half-race point and ended it at that spot only.
Michael Schumacher, on the other hand, paid the price for being rash and crashed out of the race, bringing the safety car out for a short while. The German's Mercedes shunted the back of Sergio Perez's Sauber between turn seven and eight of the floodlit street circuit, and flipped up at the front before slamming into the barriers.
Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari too crashed out towards the end to wrap up a bad day at office for his team.
For most part of the race, Vettel was followed closely by Button and Alonso while Mark Webber looked for that small window to put his car a notch ahead to finish on the podium. Webber got the better of Alonso in the 34th lap and from there on, there was no looking back.
Singapore GP 2011 started with the roar of Formula One engines, led by the man who is most certain to end the season as world champions, Red Bulls’ Sebastian Vettel.
He was leading the pack with Button breathing down his neck at the end of the tenth lap as Alonso and Mark Webber fought it out in that order respectively.
The Singapore GP kept its promise of being a thrilling night race on a street circuit as the drivers turned on the speed and upped the intensity instantly.
Fernando Alonso had a 30+ seconds pit stop in the 11th lap and came out eleventh as Button took the second position. Hamilton and Massa were in the pit stop in the 12th lap as well, one behind the other.
It was a great race for Force India as rookie Paul di Resta was sixth in his best-ever finish.
