Nobody can question India’s No. 1 ranking
Moments after India’s thumping win against South Africa at Durban, an ecstatic chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth said that the win has cemented the team’s number one Test ranking.
Zeecric.com brings you the excerpts of his interview with a news channel.
“Nobody can question India’s number one Test ranking now. We’ve beaten South Africa in their own backyard, on a bouncy track,” the former Indian opening batsman told a news channel.
Chika, as he is fondly known, also heaped a lot of praise on Indian speedster Zaheer Khan, who was instrumental in the team’s win at Durban by capturing six crucial wickets. Srikkanth said that Zaheer’s return was extremely important for the team.
“It is very important to have an experienced fast bowler. Zaheer rattled the South Africans. Getting early inroads is very very crucial. Zak is the kind of bowler who never gives up, which is his greatest quality,” he said.
The former Indian opener also said that the fast bowlers played as a unit and that is what got India through and that the present Indian team is amongst the best ever.
“The great thing about this Indian team is their ability to come back from difficult situations. They never give up…something like the Aussies used to be sometime back.”
Srikkanth also praised Rahul Dravid for completing 200 catches in Test cricket.
“The catch that he took of Dale Steyn was just amazing. Rahul is a very silent cricketer. He hasn’t been given due credit for his achievement by the media. I think he deserves more credit for what he has achieved. 200 catches in no joke,” he added.
Talking to another Indian newspaper, Srikkanth said that VVS Laxman has honoured the game with his superb match winning knock.
“(VVS) Laxman has honoured Test cricket. This innings is one of the best in the history of the game and this is certainly India’s one of the greatest wins. Laxman has been doing this too often. It goes to show the character of a man. We all know that he is one of the all time greats. The best part is that how he instills confidence among the tailenders,” he said.
