Adhiban caused a major upset, defeating German GM Thomas
Luther in the 10th and penultimate round of the 2nd SCS
International Open GM Chess tournament here today.
The race for the title has now become stiffer as Adhiban
and three GMs -- Aleksej Aleksandrov (Belarus), Martyn
Kravtsiv (Ukraine) and Alexey Dreev (Russia) -- share the lead
with eight points each.
Adhiban now needs a draw against top seed Dreev for his
second GM norm.
The day`s proceedings witnessed another upset when IM
Praveen Kumar stunned Kazak GM Anuar Ismagambetov.
Indian FM Akshat Khamparia became an IM by completing his
third and final norm with a draw against IM P Karthikeyan.
According to chief arbiter V Ravichandran, three Indian
and one Bangladeshi players have norm chances in the 11th and
final round tomorrow.
Among them, Adhiban needs a draw against top seed Dreev
for his second GM norm.
Shreyansh Daklia, Bitan Banerjee (both India) and
Mohammad Javed (Bangladesh) are the other three who have the
opportunity to secure IM norms.
Among top-board Orissa players, only Anwesh Upadhyaya
tasted victory while Swayams Mishra and Padmini Rout suffered
Swayangsu Satyapragyan and Debasish Das were held to
draws. Anwesh now has seven points and he is followed by
Satyapragyan and Debasish with 6.5 points each.
