Pune: Dhwaj Haria of Gujarat retained his national sub junior billiards crown by defeating Maharashtra rival Jaiveer Dhingra 251-174 in the final at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana on Saturday.
The 18-year-old 12th standard student from Ahmedabad had to quell the strong challenge from his Maharashtra rival, a crucial break of 49 at an important juncture in the see-saw battle proving decisive.
Karnataka`s ML Lakshman scored a 190-137 win over Orissa`s Ashutosh Padhy to clinch the third spot.
The one hour final was going close with difference of just 17 points between Haria and Dhingra before the near half-century break by the former, which included a pot and in-off at a key point, turned the tide in the Gujarat boy`s favour.
Haria also started his campaign in the junior national championships that commenced with a century break (104) and a career-high tally of 529 in the nationals over Saransh Chaudary of Haryana to move into the third round.
