London: Cycling could dropped from the Olympic games if Lance Armstrong, who has confessed to doping, reveals sport’s governing body’s involvement in covering up his doping scandal.
Dick Pound, the former head of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said radical action would have to be taken if Armstrong provided proof that officials from the International Cycling Union (UCI) were involved in doping, the Telegraph reports. Armstrong has confessed to doping during a no-holds-barred chat show with Oprah Winfrey on Monday, and according to reports, the American is also ready to testify against top UCL officials. Pound said the only way to clean cycling from the shame of doping is by taking it of the Olympics, and making the governing body realize that if they want to be a part of the Games then they would need to earn the right, Pound said the IOC would need to look into the matter since the UCL has a reputation of being lenient on the unscrupulous athletes. Pound has long been a strong critic of the UCI and had said in October in reaction to allegations that Armstrong might have bribed UCI officials that it was not credible that they did not know what was going on. The UCI set up an independent panel in November to investigate Armstrong and allegations that the governing body accepted financial donations from him in order to cover up failed tests. Hein Verbruggen, the president of the UCI during Armstrong’s peak years and when doping was rampant in the peloton, refused to comment Tuesday. ANI
