Asiad bid scrapped amidst corruption in CWG 2010

New Delhi: The Indian government has rejected a possible bid for Asiad Games 2019 following reports of widespread corruption in the Commonwealth Games 2010.

The Sports Ministry rejected Indian Olympic Association’s application for a Rs 15 crore for the Asiad Games. The money was to start IOA’s campaign for hosting the Asiad, postponed for a year from 2018 by the Olympic Council of Asia.

According to sources, sports minister MS Gill wants to see Congress politician Suresh Kalmadi out of the IOA, where he has held the chief post since 1996, before next year’s Olympic Games bid.

Kalmadi’s fourth term expires in 2012 but the government may move a bill later in the months seeking to restrict the number of terms a person can have at a sports body’s helm to two.
