The appointment makes Hammon the first woman to become part of coaching staff in the NBA. She also represents San Antonio Stars in the WNBA.
The official NBA website quoted Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich saying: "I`m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs."
Last month, Hammon had announced she would retire from professional basketball as a player at the end of the 2014 season. She is considered one of the most successful woman basketball players in WNBA history.
Hammon was also named in the WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All-Time in 2011.
