Bindra, Narang top draw in nationals
Pune: Beijing Olympic Games gold-medalist Abhinav Bindra and Delhi Commonwealth Games show-stealer Gagan Narang are the star attractions in the seven-day 55th National Shooting Championship Competitions (NSCC) in Small Bore Rifle and Pistol events commencing on Tuesday.
Top guns Anjali Bhagwat, Tejaswini Savant, Anisa Sayyad and Rahi Sarnobat are the major names on the distaff side in the championships to be organised at the Balewadi Shooting Ranges by the Maharashtra Rifle Association under the aegis of the National Rifle Association of India.
A record 2,000 shooters from 26 states, including 300 from the host state, are participating in the event, much higher than previous year that saw over 1,700 shooters taking part in New Delhi, according to organising secretary Ashok Pandit.
The championships will end on November 22.
The competition includes 13 open category events and the event winners would receive Rs 25,000 apiece.
In air weapon events, a total of eight events are to be conducted in junior and youth categories and the winners would take home Rs 15,000 each.
This is the first time cash prizes are being given to the winners at the nationals, it was announced.
Maharashtra is playing host to the shooting nationals after a gap of 26 years, having organised the previous one in 1985 at Kolhapur.
