Boxer Poonia assures India bronze in Commonwealth Youth Games

New Delhi: Promising boxer Rahul Poonia has assured India at least a bronze medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Mann by advancing into the semi-finals of the light flyweight category.

Poonia, a gold medallist in the Youth Olympics Games held in Cuba earlier this year, booked his place in the last four round after his Malawi opponent Israel Kammwamba conceded the bout due to injury.

However, it disappointment for India in the fly weight section as reigning youth National champion Balakrishna Vankala crashed out in the quarterfinals.

Vankala, a silver medallist in the Youth Olympic Games, went down 12:14 to Josh John of Wales.

In the middle weight category, another Indian Youth Olympics gold medallist, Surender Singh will be up against Nathan Thorley of Wales in the quarterfinals, while Sumit Sangwan will lock horns with Jack Massey of England in the light heavy weight segment.
