Brit police clamp down on websites aiming to dupe Olympics visitors

London: Detectives from UK’s top cyber crime unit have spotted out various websites, which are targeting Olympic visitors by using Olympic images.

Police have already shut down around 2000 such websites, which were trying to con people by selling them luxury goods in the name of Olympics. Close eye is being kept on thousands of more such Olympic websites which have come up recently and are trying to endorse their good by deliberately relating themselves to London Olympics which will be taking place next year. The signature image of five Olympic rings is the most commonly used tool by these frauds on their websites to convince their target consumers. “These websites have been set up and are in a holding position, and we will monitor them to see if they are used for criminal purposes”, says Janet Williams, Deputy Assistant Commissioner at the Metropolitan police. Police officials are ready to tackle any kind of cyber crime, which is expected to hit London Olympics, a daily reports. “We would be naive to think that it would be the only threat during the Olympics. The issues we are planning around include a possible attack on the transport system but we have to be flexible,” she further adds. Police and security agencies are not taking any possible cyber crime threat lightly since the e-crime unit has largely overlooked Olympics and cyber crime has increased rapidly in last few years. ANI
