Kolkata: The Calcutta Derby on January 9 by the Royal Calcutta Turf Club will have a total prize money of 1.7 crore, the highest offered for a race here this season.
The winner will receive Rs 62.66 lakh and a trophy of Rs 1 lakh, the club`s Chief Executive Officer, Lt Gen J R Mukherjee (retd) told a press conference today.
Eight horses will participate in the Derby stakes, he said.
Deepak Khaitan, Vice Chairman and managing Director of Eveready Industries Ltd, the sponsors, said that there would be evening racing with live television coverage shortly.
Off course betting would also be introduced soon in five places outside Kolkata, he said.
There would be no online betting, he added.
