Chawla stuns Mehta, quarterfinalists spotted

Kolkata: India No 2 and reigning champion Aditya Mehta was stunned by Kamal Chawla 1-3 in a major surprise, even as both of them made the quarters from group A in the second Kolkata Open National Invitaion Snooker Championship here Friday.

The result meant Mehta of Indian Oil finished second behind Railman Chawla from group A as quarterfinalists were spotted.

It was a heartbreak for local favourite Alok Kumar who failed to make the quarters after going down 1-3 to national billiards champion Alok Kumar (ONGC) who made the cut along with Faisal Khan of the Railways.

Manan Chandra of BPCL and Siddarth Parikh or Railways made the quarters from group B, while Yasin Merchant (Maharashtra) and Brijesh Damani (Indian Oil) were the ones to make the last eight from group C.

Results

Group A: Aditya Mehta beat Laxman Rawat 3-0 (122(115)-00, 72-61, 70-24); Kamal Chawla beat Ravi Goenka 3-0 (52-08, 78-00, 84-09); Kamal Chawla beat Laxman Rawat 3-0 (66-31, 76(45)-44, 62-52).

Group B: Dharminder Lilly beat Abhishek Kedia 3-0 (76-24, 58-47, 83-33); Siddharth Parikh beat Abhishek Kedia :: 3-0 (51-43, 62-28, 64-09); Manan Chandra beat Shivam Arora 3-0 (69-29, 64-23, 75(74)-00).

Group C: Sundeep Gulati beat Rajesh Tulsian 3-0 (74-34, 66-25, 65-09); Yasin Merchant beat Vijay Nichani 3-1 (82-40, 69-59, 27-65, 72-00); Vijay Nichani beat Rajesh Tulsian 3-1 (72-04, 38-66, 71-22, 67-61).

Group D: Faisal Khan beat Ankit Kariwala 3-2 (72-16, 33-68, 65-21, 42-43, 76-27); Sourav Kothari beat Aamer Hussain 3-1 (24-83, 65-14, 102(53)-20, 67-33); Alok Kumar beat Faisal Khan 3-1 (77-32, 62-66, 66-61, 59-39); Faisal Khan beat Shreevardhan Poddar 3-0 (63-18, 60-29, 64-09); Alok Kumar beat Sourav Kothari 3-1 (68-49, 29-67, 78-61, 83(83)-21).
