CWG baton enters financial capital Mumbai

Seventy seven days since it started from the Wagah Border, the Queen’s Baton for the Commonwealth Games entered the city by sea from Pune on Friday morning.

Mumbai: Seventy seven days since it started from the Wagah Border, the Queen’s Baton for the Commonwealth Games entered the city by sea from Pune on Friday morning. Several prominent personalities from sports and business world are participating in the baton relay, which has begun from the Gateway of India and would end at the Mumbai University (Fort). The Baton entered the city at the Karanje Naval Jetty (Dockyard) at 9.45 am in the morning. The main function will take place at the Gateway of India at noon, where the baton will be received by chief minister Ashok Chavan and his deputy Chagan Bhujbal. Among those who have confirmed participation in the relay are Kamlesh Mehta (Arjuna Awardee, Table Tennis), Rachita Mistry (Arjuna Awardee, Athletics), former India hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay (Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee) and Praveen Thipsay (Chess Grand Master and former Commonwealth Chess champion). Also expected to participate are Bhagyashree Thipsay (Women’s chess Grand Master), Raghunandan Gokhale (Dronacharya Awardee, Chess), M M Somaiya (Arjuna Awardee, Hockey), Joaquim Carvalho (Arjuna Awardee, Hockey) and Adil Sumariwala (Arjuna Awardee, Athletics). Ratan Tata and Adi Godrej are among the businessmen who have expressed their willingness to participate in the rally.The baton will remain in the city till Sunday, after which it will proceed towards Daman and Diu.
