New Delhi: In a ground-breaking step, the world aquatics governing body (FINA) has approved the introduction of mixed-gender teams in synchronised diving during the Extraordinary Congress in Doha last week.

With the approval, mixed teams of men and women will be able to compete as pairs. Initially, mixed teams will compete in the 3m and 10m synchronised events.

The body also gave approval for mixed-gender duets in synchronised swimming.

It's expected that the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia will be the first major international event wherein mixed gender events in synchronised swimming and diving will take place. The championship is scheduled to be held from July 24 to August 9.

Mixed-team competitions were held at the recent Summer Youth Olympic Games and European Championships.
