New Delhi: It was curtains for India in the
men`s singles event of the Punj Lloyd PSA Masters 2010 after
national champion Saurav Ghosal went down fighting to third
seed Egyptian Amr Shabana in the pre-quarters at the Siri Fort
Sports Complex here on Thursday.
In the women`s event -- WISPA Masters -- all the three
Indian in fray, including world number 36 Joshna Chinappa,
failed to progress after losing their respective opening round
matches against higher-seeded opponents.
World number 22 and the country`s top ranked player,
Ghosal, lost 5-11, 6-11, 11-6, 9-11 in 42 minutes to the sixth
ranked Shabana, while Chinappa gave a glimpse of her fighting
abilities before going down 6-11, 7-11, 8-11, 7-11, 10-12 against
Hong Kong`s Annie Au in 55 minutes at court number 3.
Unseeded qualifier Anaka Alankamony was defeated 3-11,
4-11, 5-11 in 23 minutes by sixth seed Malaysian Wee Wern Low,
while Aparajitha Balamurukam lost 4-11, 2-11, 1-11 to third seed
Camille Serme of France in the bottom half of the main draw.
Other top seed men`s players including Australia`s
Cameron Pilley, Egypt`s Hisham Mohd Ashour, England`s James
Willstrop and women racqueters Jenny Duncalf of England and
Kasey Brown of Australia advanced to the quarterfinals of the
singles event, winning their respective matches on the third
day of the championship.
