Government interference hangs Pak’s London Olympic participation in balance

Karachi: Pakistan’s participation in the 2012 London Games hangs in balance as the International Olympic Committee has called for its sports officials over reports of government interference.

Syed Arif Hasan, president of Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) said on Saturday that Pakistan faces the prospect of ban if it fails to comply with the Olympic charter that calls for not government interference.

Pakistan Sports Board wants the POA to adopt its two tenure policy for the chief of any national federation.

"The IOC has summoned both the parties on Monday to make clear that any government interference is unacceptable in Olympic association matters, but things can go wrong," Hasan was quoted as saying by a news agency.

"Under the IOC charter, political and government interference is not acceptable and it can lead to the cancellation of IOC membership and in turn an Olympic ban," Hasan added.
