India make winning start at Asian Boxing C`ship

New Delhi: CWG bronze medallists Jai Bhagwan registered a win in the preliminary round as India made a good start at the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championship at Incheon in South Korea.

Up against Zorigtbaatar Enkhzorig of Mongolia, Bhagwan, a silver medalist at the last edition, outpunched his rival 19-12 in the 60Kg weight category.

In a keenly contested match, both the boxers exchanged blows before the Mongolian lost his rhythm, committing three fouls as Bhagwan emerged victories.

Over 150 boxers from 24 Asian countries are vying for top honours at the August 3-13 biennial event.

Among all the participating countries China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Korea, the hosts will be represented in the Continental Championships in all the weight categories.

The XXVI edition of the championships will serve as a preparatory ground for the first qualifying event for 2012 London Olympics, the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships, which is slated to be held in September this year at Baku, Azerbaijan. PTI
