India medal-less on fourth day of 20th Asian Athletics C`ship
Pune: India failed to pick up a single medal on the fourth and penultimate day of the 20th Asian Athletics Championships even as China ruled supreme by grabbing four gold medals here on Saturday.
The best performance by the Indians today came in the women`s 4x400m relay race with the quartet of S Sini, Merlin Joseph, Srabani Nanda and Asha Roy finishing 4th by clocking 45.03secs at the Shiv Chhatrapati Stadium at Balewadi here.
China won the event in 44.01secs, while Japan and Thailand were second and third in 44.38secs and 44.44secs respectively.
The second best result came from Sushmita Singha Roy in women`s heptathlon as she finished fifth with an aggregate of 5328 in the seven-event competition.
She was second till the end of the fourth event and third at the end of the fifth. But she slumped to fifth in the sixth event -- javelin throw -- and could not recover in the last event -- 800m -- which is her weak event.
Wassana Winatho of Thialand won the gold with 5818 points, while Yekaterina Voronina (5599) of Uzbekistan and Chie Kiriyama (5451) of Japan were second and third respectively.
India remained at sixth spot with one gold, three silver and five bronze, while a rampaging China left behind all their rivals with 12 gold, four silver and five bronze with just one day to go in the Championships.
Bahrain continued at the second position with four gold, four silver and one bronze, while Uzbekistan were third with three gold, four silver and one bronze. Saudi Arabia and Japan were on fourth and fifth respectively.
Though it was a dry day for India, Asian powerhouse China continued their dominance with two meet records from their athletes -- Li Ling in women`s pole vault by scaling 4.54m and Li Lingwei hurling 60.65m in women`s javelin throw.
Satinder Singh qualified for men`s 400m finals after finishing second in the heats in 51.20secs, while Manjit Singh also made it to the men`s 800m final after finishing second in his heat in 1:49.12.
In women`s 200m race, three Indians -- Asha Roy, Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda -- qualified for the finals. Roy won her heat in 24.01secs, while Chand and Nanda were second and third in their respective heats in 23.76secs and 24.20secs respectively.
China bagged a gold and a bronze in the shot put event from Liu Xiangrong (18.67m) and Gao Yang (17.76m), while Iran`s Leyla Rajabi won the silver with 18.18m.
China also bagged a gold and a silver in women`s pole vault with Li Ling and Ren Minqian clearing 4.54m and 4.40m respectively.
The fourth gold for China came from women`s javelin throw with LI Lingwei claiming the yellow metal by creating a new meet record of 60.65m.
India`s Annu Rani, Suman Devi and Mukesh Kumari were seventh, ninth and 11th respectively.
Tajikistan opened their medal account with a gold in men`s hammer throw. Nazarov Dilshod came up with an effort of 78.32m to bag the yellow metal.
Zenkawi Ali of Kuwait won the silver with 74.70m, while Dakai Oi of China was third with a throw of 74.19m.
Three Indians in the fray -- Chandrodaya Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Kaushal Singh -- were eighth, 11th and 13th with throws of 67.42m, 63.18m and 60.65m.
No Indian could qualify for men`s 200m final though two -- Amiya Kumar Mallick (21.67secs) and Pratiek Ninawe (21.72secs) -- reached the semifinals where they finished fifth and sixth in their respective heats.
The Indians also brought up the rear in the women`s shot put with Neha Singh and Navjeet Kaur Dhillon finishing the last two in the nine-athlete field.
Neha came up with 13.73m, while Dhillon cleared 12.91m.
