Indian Govt asks states to implement provisions of Sports Code

The Sports Ministry has instructed all the states and the Union Territories to implement National Sports Development Code (NSCDI) for the sake of good governance and transparency in the functioning of state and district-level sports Associations.

New Delhi: The Sports Ministry has instructed all the states and the Union Territories to implement National Sports Development Code (NSCDI) for the sake of good governance and transparency in the functioning of state and district-level sports Associations.

In a recent letter sent to Chief Secretaries of all states, Sports Secretary Ajit Sharan said the provisions of the Code are binding on all national level federations.

"Since sports is a State subject, suitable instructions/law need to be promulgated by the State Governments as well as to enforce the provisions of the NSDCI in order to bring about good governance and transparency in the functioning of all the State and District-level Associations," the letter stated.

The instructions related to age and tenure were challenged by the Indian Olympic Association in the Delhi High Court dismissed the Writ Petition and upheld the authority of the government to lay down instructions and laws for the sports bodies.
