Indian TT team to train in China for next month`s World C`ship
New Delhi: A 21-member Indian table tennis team has reached Zhengding, China, for a 25-day training there to prepare for the forthcoming World Championships in Moscow from May 23-30.
The 10 men and 11 women, who left for China on Monday, will train under the guidance of the coaches at the National Centre for Table Tennis in Zhengding and participate in some competitions there.
The training stint is expected to help the paddlers get a look at the way the Chinese train before international events, TTFI Secretary General Dhanraj Choudhary said in a release.
At the end of the training, a 10-member team, comprising five men and five women, will depart for Russia for the World Championships.
Achanta Sharath Kamal, top-ranked Indian men paddler at world number 70, and Mouma Das, ranked 202nd in women`s world ranking, will spearhead the Indian challenge in Russia.
Other promising players include Commonwealth Youth Games champion G Sathiyan and Ankita Das.
Of the 72 countries participating in the world event, India have been ranked 29th in men`s section and 34th in women`s category.
Choudhary said the Indian teams are expected to do better in the World Championships this time.
"I expect the teams to top Division 2 so that they qualify for Division 1 in the next world event. Division 1 consists of best 24 teams in the world," he said.
The training stint in China will also help the Indian paddlers in this year`s Indian Open championships in New Delhi (June 16-20) and Commonwealth Games (October 3-14).
