Mumbai: National champion Punjab romped to their third win on the trot, putting it across Railways 92-81 in an engrossing men`s league encounter at the seventh All India Savio Cup-Don Bosco Basketball tournament here today.
In an earlier women`s match, Southern Railway, led by international Geetu Anna Jose, virtually stamped their name on the title with a 72-61 victory over South East Central Railway, with Geetu alone scoring 35 points.
Punjab, whose forces are marshalled by experienced Jagdeep Singh, are being served well by their young players and once again it was the duo of Amritpal Singh Jr and Amjot Singh who did the bulk of the scoring against Railways.
Jagdeep kept moving up and down the court, setting up plays and then rushing back to shore up the defence.
It was a team effort from Punjab, with Amritpal, Amjot and Jagdep all scoring 22 points each that saw them prevail over Railways, for whom Prakash Mishra scored 25 points and Gagandeep Singh 22 points respectively.
Railways, who managed to stay within striking distance of Punjab in the first two quarters, simply faded away in the last two as Punjab players maintained a relentless pace.
Geetu Anna Jose, the only Indian player who has matched up to international standards seems unstoppable when playing at home and once again she scored at will, with even the
experienced rival players failing to stop her.
Geetu was well supported by the stylish Anita P, who scored 22 points.
