Chandigarh: Jaspal Singh Kandhari has been unanimously elected the President of the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI), while Dr B S Ghuman of Punjab Gymnastics Association has been chosen as the General Secretary, a spokesman said here on Friday.
Dr S Shanti Kumar Singh of All Manipur Gymnastics Association has been elected as the treasurer, while Meera Korde of Maharashtra, Odisha's Ashok Kumar Sahoo and M Dhinkar Rajeswaran of Puducherry have been named the vice-presidents.
The fourth position of the vice-president remained vacant, as only three nominations were received by the Returning Officer, Justice R S Mongia, who is a former Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court.
O P Ranote of Himachal Pradesh, Ram Dulare of Delhi, Nishi Kant Pathak of Jharkhand and Digvijay Singh of Madhya Pradesh were elected as joint secretaries.
The Returning Officer also announced the names of Executive Committee members -- A Someshwar (Andhra Pradesh), K Atmachandran (Kerala) and Anil Mishra (Uttar Pradesh).
The election of the GFI Executive Body was held following a directive from the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Besides approving the name of the Returning Officer, the Ministry had also deputed S S Roy, Executive Director, Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala, as its Observer for these elections.
Roy, who was present at the election venue, will submit his report in a sealed envelop to the Central Government on the conduct of these polls.
The Gymnastics Associations of 26 states and Union Territories affiliated with the GFI took part in the elections.
New president Kandhari said he will soon sit down with the newly elected Executive Body members and discuss how to take gymnastics to the next level "so that the country's gymnasts have the best training facilities and opportunities to compete and excel in the international arena, particularly in the Olympics".
