Jimjang Deru creates national record in weightlifting

Weightlifter Jimjang Deru of Arunachal Pradesh created a national record by lifting 238 kgs in the under 56 kg category at the 10th Youth National Weightlifting Championship held in Yamuna Nagar, Haryana.

Itanagar: Weightlifter Jimjang Deru of Arunachal Pradesh created a national record by lifting 238 kgs in the under 56 kg category at the 10th Youth National Weightlifting Championship held in Yamuna Nagar, Haryana.

National champion in the category for the past three years, Deru lifted 103 kgs in Snatch and 135 kg in Clean & Jerk to clinch the gold for the event yesterday, a release by the Arunachal Weightlifting Association said here.

He broke his own record set last year at the 9th Youth National Weightlifting Championship held at Guwahati.

He is also holding the title of the Asian Youth Champion, which he had won recently at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Meanwhile, another lifter from Arunachal Yukar Tachack clinched the Silver for 62 kg weight category by lifting a total of 220 kgs.

He lifted 100 kg in Snatch and 120 kgs in Clean and Jerk.

Another budding talent from the state, Dampi Umpai bagged the Bronze medal in the Under-56 Kg weight category.

Umpai lifted 90 kg in Snatch and 114 kg in Clean & Jerk to total 204 kg, the release added.
