New Delhi: Former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi`s close aide Shekhar M Deorukhkar was remanded to CBI custody for two more days for interrogation of his alleged role in the multi-crore rupees overlays scam linked to the last year`s sporting event.
"Considering the nature of the case and the allegations levelled against the accused, I am satisfied that further police custodial interrogation is required to unearth the entire conspiracy. Accused is remanded in CBI custody till February 19," Special CBI Judge O P Saini said.
Seeking extension of Deorukhkar`s custody, CBI told the court that the probe in the case was not yet complete and the accused was not answering properly during the interrogation.
"The accused is evasive in his replies and is not cooperating with the investigating agency and his further sustained custodial interrogation is required," senior Public Prosecutor V K Sharma and Akhilesh, appearing for CBI, said.
The agency said the accused needs to be confronted with other suspects and documents related to the case.
"There are sufficient evidence on record which confirm that the accused had accepted a huge bribe amount from overlays suppliers for himself and other officials of the Organising Committee (CWG) in return for award of contracts at exorbitant rates and release of payments to suppliers," CBI said in its remand application.
The probe agency also said CWG OC Director General V K Verma and other officials entered into a criminal conspiracy with Managing Director Binu Nanu of private firms Meroform India Pvt Ltd and G L Events Pvt Ltd, arrested for his role in the CWG scam, and others to cause undue favours to various other companies.
The other companies that CBI named in its remand application included M/S PICO Deepali Overlays Consortium, M/S Nussli (Switzerland) Ltd and M/S ESAJV D Art Indo Consortium.
CBI said these firms were given undue favours during award of contracts for the mega sporting event held last year.
"The accused public servants, by abusing their official positions thereby cheated and caused undue loss to the government of India and corresponding gain to the said four companies and themselves," CBI said.
During the hearing, Deorukhkar alleged he was physically assaulted by CBI officials during his custodial interrogation.
