Mayor Cup chess: Aleksandrov, Deviatkin begin with a bang

Mumbai: Top seed Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus and number two Andrei Deviatkin of Russia scored easy opening round victories over their Indian rivals as they began their campaigns with a bang in the 5th Mayor Cup International prize money chess tournament at the Chetna College today.

Playing with white pieces, Grand Master Aleksandrov defeated Atul Pende in 38 moves on board one while GM Deviatkin outsmarted Prasad Aurangabadkar opting for a Caro-Cann defence after taking control on the 17th move.

On board 3, V M Rajeev blundered twice against 3rd seeded GM Nikolai Chadaev (ELO 2563) of Russia and went down in just 23 moves after preferring a Sicilian defense.
