Merchant steamrolls Joshi to move into last 16

Chennai: Asian champion Yasin Merchant showed the form of old as he demolished Devendra Joshi (PSPB) to progress to the pre-quarterfinals of the 78th Senior National Snooker Championship on Sunday.

Forty four-year-old Merchant, who had won the Asian Championship title in 1989 and 2002, needed just 50 minutes to wrap up the match with a 63-18, 79-0, 52-20, 75-25 victory after capping with a 74 break in the second frame.

Merchant is joined by defending champion Pankaj Advani (PSPB), 1997 national title winner Siddarth Rao of Tamil Nadu and Manan Chandra (PSPB).

Continuing his great form this season, Advani outclassed Chandigarh`s Sumit Talwar 58-49, 72-3, 117-2, 69-22, while Siddarth Rao got the better of Faisal khan (Rlys) 40-71, 64-26, 4-74, 67-55, 51-9, 60-72, 77-72 in a long drawn battle. Manan Chandra (PSPB) beat Lucky Vatnani (AP) 49-52, 70-9, 67-4, 59-7, 70-49.
