Boston: Reigning World Series MVP David Ortiz has agreed to a one-year contract extension for the 2015 season, the Boston Red Sox announced on Sunday night.
The 38-year-old Dominican Republic native batted .309 with 30 home runs, 38 doubles and 103 RBI over 137 regular-season games for the American League East champions in 2013. "With this agreement, we have near certainty that David Ortiz will finish his career in a Red Sox uniform, which is something we have all wanted and that we are all proud of," said Red Sox owner John Henry. "It is difficult to describe David`s contributions to our city both on the field and off the field, and we are so proud to have this ambassador of our game with us as he continues on this road to Cooperstown." US media reported the contract extension is worth $16 million and includes club options for 2016 and 2017. Ortiz had 18 hits in 51 at-bats during the playoffs. He hit a blistering .688 average (11-for-16) with two homers and six RBI in a six-game win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.
