NADA to conduct dope tests at school athletics meet

New Delhi: Continuing its drive against doping, National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) has decided to conduct dope testing at the 55th Kerala State Schools` Athletic Meet, which started at Ernakulam, on Thursday.

According to NADA Director General Rahul Bhatnagar, this is the first time that the Anti-Doping agency will be conducting doping samples in a School Games in big way.

Bhatnagar also informed that the NADA teams have been constituted and deputed to conduct about 40 samples in this competition.

"This is being done as part of the programme of NADA to extend the dope testing to the college and school level competitions," Bhatnagar said in a press release on Thursday

In one of the worst doping scandals that rocked the country earlier this year, eight track and field athletes tested positive for anabolic steroids

Mandeep Kaur, Sini Jose and Ashwini Akkunji, who were part of the 4x400m relay quartet that won gold in the Commonwealth and Asian Games last year, and three other quartermilers Jauna Murmu, Tiana Mary Thomas and Priyanka Panwar were caught for doping.

The other two dope-tainted athletes were long jumper Hari Krishnan Muralidharan and shot putter Sonia.
