NZ athlete fails doping test

Wellington: A New Zealand athlete has tested positive to the banned stimulant and recreational drug dimethylamylamine (DMAA), testing agency Drug Free Sport New Zealand said Monday.

The agency refused to name the athlete or identify the sport involved but said the case would be handed to New Zealand`s Sport Tribunal to determine a penalty.

The World Anti-Doping Agency currently recommends a two-year ban for DMAA use but planned to reclassify it next year.

The substance, also referred to as methylhexaneamine, is classed as an S6 stimulant on the WADA`s prohibited list and is banned in competition.
