Ranchi: Services brightened their semifinal chances by edging past Tamil Nadu 2-1 in the men`s hockey event of the National Games at the Astroturf ground here on Friday.

Services captain Ignace Tirkey put his team ahead through a scorcher before Tamil Nadu`s V Ramdass evened the score-line with an equally fierce strike.

But Dhananjaya Mahadhik field goal in the dying minutes and some brilliant defence in the final three minutes helped Services seal the win.

Services had earlier defeated Chandigarh 3-2 in their pool A match.

Orissa, which had lost to Maharashtra 1-2 in the men`s group `B` match, once again put up a poor show today, losing 1-3 to Delhi and are virtually out of semifinal race.

Danish Mujtaba scored twice and Damandeep Singh struck once for Delhi while Jagwant Singh reduced the margin for Orissa.

Punjab men have already won their pool B matches earlier, beating Delhi 4-3 and Maharashtra 3-2 to keep their hopes for a last four berth.

After the rest day tomorrow, group matches will resume on February 20 and 21.

The semifinals and the final are scheduled for February 23 and 25 respectively.
