Sharath in quarters at Brazil Open TT

India's Achanta Sharath Kamal defeated Joao Monteiro of Portugal 4-2 to storm into Men's singles quarterfinal of the Brazil Open Table Tennis Championship at Sao Paulo.

New Delhi, June 24: India's Achanta Sharath Kamal defeated Joao Monteiro of Portugal 4-2 to storm into Men's
singles quarterfinal of the Brazil Open Table Tennis Championship at Sao Paulo. The double Commonwealth Gold Medallist carved out a 11-8 11-9 9-11 12-10 7-11 11-9 win to make it to the last 8 where he will meet Christophe Bertin of France.

Earlier, Sharath, ranked 124 in world, started his campaign with a comfortable 11-4 11-7 11-8 9-11 10-12 11-7 win against qualifier Cazuo Matsumoto of Brazil in the first round.

Though Bertin is a rank below Sharath, the French showed fine form to clinch an upset win against third seed Bojan Tokic Slovenia's in the second round and could pose a threat to the Chennai boy.

Top seed Yoshida Kaji of Japan escaped the wrath of unfancied players who accounted for the both the second and third seed -- France's Christopher Legout and Slovakia's Peter Sereda. Legout lost to Korean Rae Eon Cho while Sereda was defeated by Kwon Jim Lee.

Sharath is the lone Indian in fray now as national champion Shubhajit Saha and Soumyadeep Roy lost in the qualifiers.

In men's doubles, Shubhajit Saha pairing up with Carlos Machado of Spain, lost to Jonas Jakab and Daniel Zwickil of Hungary 7-11 7-11 6-11 8-11 in the first round. Roy and Sharath could not progress beyond the 2nd round of qualifiers.

In the women's singles and doubles, Poulomi Ghatak, Kasturi Chakarvarthy and Mousumi Paul failed in various stages of the qualifying hurdle.
