Kolkata: Grand Master Dzhumaev Marat of Uzbekistan carved out a hard-fought win over International Master Vishnu Prasanna to lift the title in the Rose Valley Open International Chess Tournament here Thursday.
Marat`s ultimate triumph made him richer by Rs. 3.5 lakh and brought heartbreak for two Indians - GMs S.P. Sethuraman and Deep Sengupta - in the final round at the Alekhine Chess Club.
Sengupta could not break IM Swapnil Dhopade`s defence and had to be content with sharing a point. Sethuraman had a quick draw with second seed GM Anton Korobov, and settled for the second slot.
IM Vidit Santosh Gujrathi was third, and Sengupta finished fifth.
Two members of "Team Anand" - GM Suryasekhar and top seed GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek ended their adventure here with wins over GM Adly Ahmed of Egypt and GM Viorel Iordachescu of Moldavia respectively.
