When Manchester United and Manchester City once contemplated ‘merging’!London: Manchester United and Manchester City, who are bitter rivals in the Premier League, once considered merging, according to a new book.

City’s vice-chairman Frank Johnson had put this idea, which is almost unimaginable now, forward in 1964.

At the time the Red Devils were flying high with stars such as Sir Bobby Charlton, while their neighbours were struggling with crowds as low as 15,000

“The idea was killed by both clubs before it ever became public,” a daily quoted football historian and the author of the book Gary James, as saying.

The clubs did have closer links at the time, as City had let United share their Maine Road ground while Old Trafford was being rebuilt following its bombing in the Second World War, and again for floodlit European games in the mid-50s, the paper said.
