‘Sangakkara XI’ beats star teams at IIFA
Colombo: Even as the star struck, frenzied fans thronged the SSC stadium here to supports their favourite actors, `Sangakkara XI` led by Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakara eventually emerged as the winners in celebrity T20 cricket matches organised by the IIFA foundation.
The initiative was part of the ongoing IIFA Weekend part of the `cricket for change project` under which former child soldiers will be rehabilitated.
`Suneil Shetty XI` led by actor Suneil Shetty played `Sangakkara XI` in the first match which it lost by 141 runs.
In the other matcher the Lankan skipper`s team outnumbered `Hrithik Roshan XI` and won.
Bollywood actor Salman Khan, who did not participate in the match and was rehearsing for his performance tomorrow for the awards night, visited the stadium towards the end.
Stars like Bipasha Basu, Anupam Kher and Anil Kapoor also took a round of the ground to acknowledge the crowds.
Kumar Sangakkara`s team were winners of the "Oscar IIFA challenge foundation cup" while Hrithik`s team was declared the runner up.
Sangakkara was named the man of the match while Suneil Shetty won the celebrity man of the match award.
Ace spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was adjudged the best bowler and Upul Chandana was felicitated for the best catch while Ruwan Kalpage was honoured for hitting the best six.
The stadium was jam packed and some fans even entered the ground to have a glimpse of the stars.
