Wimbledon 2012 final: Can Murray make Britain proud after 76 years?

With huge expectations, 25-year-old Andy Murray is seeking history by becoming the first Briton in 76 years to win a Wimbledon men`s singles title.

Wimbledon: Britain’s no. 1 Andy Murray will be under huge pressure when he hits the Centre Court at the All England Club to play Wimbledon men’s singles final. Being the local boy, the expectations would be tremendous, and the pressure is even more when you are playing against the greatest tennis player of all time. Britain haven’t had the pleasure of watching a local boy win a singles’ title at the prestigious Grand Slam. Last time it happened was way back in 1936 when Fred Perry made his countrymen proud by clinching the title. Since 1938, it is for the first time that a local boy has made it to the Wimbledon final. The 25-year-old has played quality tennis right through the tournament and the absence of Rafael Nadal has given him an opportunity to make history in front of the home crowd. On Saturday, in a tense five-setter, Jonathan Marray made the crowd go gaga after he became the first Briton to win the Wimbledon men`s doubles title for 76 years. Patrick Hughes and Raymond Tuckey were the last British winners way back in 1936.The 31-year-old along with Dane Frederik Nielsen overcame fifth seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau in five sets. It was an extremely proud moment for Marray and the local crowd at the Centre Court. The crowd will expect Andy Murray to add to their celebrations. But it’s a very tough task for the World No. 4 as he will have to pass through the litmus test of stalling Federer’s dream to become the third man to win seven Wimbledon titles after Pete Sampras and William Renshaw to win seven Wimbledon titles. Federer stormed past Djokovic in the semi-final and the way he played, even the World No. 1 looked helpless with his spectacular dominance on the grass court. Federer will come with all guns blazing as he has a point to prove to the critics who have been criticizing the legend for his drop in form due to the age factor. The title is even more important for the King of Grass as he would reclaim the World No. 1 rank, in case if he wins his 17th Grand Slam title. But not to forget, Jonathan Marray and his partner had stunned World No. 1 seeds, the Bryan brothers to reach the final. The home crowd advantage definitely had a role to play in their dream run. The same crowd would once again gather at the Centre Court with much more expectations. Over to you Murray!
