Melbourne: Maria Sharapova maintained her ruthless charge to a second Australian Open title by beating her compatriot Ekaterina Makarova on Tuesday to advance to the semi-final of the event.

Sharapova registered 6-2, 6-2 win over Makarova and will now meet Li Na of China.
The second seeded Russian took 66 minutes to overpower her opponent into submission thereby continuing her flawless reign in the current event.
"Today was a matter of staying focused because I know how excited she was to play me," Sharapova was quoted as saying after the match by a news agency.
"No matter what our record is, we always have close matches," she said.
