Melbourne: Serena Williams continued her dominant performance as she kept her hopes of a sixth Australian Open title alive, beating Japan’s Ayumi Morita 6-1, 6-3.
The straight sets win gets her safely through to the Round of 16 and, with her serve getting ever stronger and her ground-play nearing the best we’ve seen of her, she must be counted as one of the favourites to go all the way.
Even as her sister crashed out to Maria Sharapova yesterday, Serena showed no signs of slackening, as she raced to an easy first set win.
The second set started off uneasily for the American as she was 3-0 down having been broken early in the set. But she switched on her A game and won 6 consecutive games to keep her in the hunt for her third consecutive singles title down under.
She’ll face Russian Maria Kirilenko in the Round of 16.
